IFUW Pre-Conference Visit - Edinburgh, Scotland.

Friday 3 - Thursday 9 August 2007

Welcome

The Scottish Associations extend a warm welcome to members of the International Federation who visit Scotland prior to the 2007 Conference in Manchester. We have linked with the Office of Lifelong Learning at the University of Edinburgh to arrange an exciting programme for you on Edinburgh, past and present. You will gain a unique insight into the history, culture, art, architecture, and literature of Edinburgh and Scotland and will have the opportunity to view selected items from the Edinburgh International Festival. You will also meet the members of the local associations, relax with them and enjoy some home hospitality.

Catriona Thompson
President, Scottish Federation of University Women

Introduction

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, is one of the greenest and most architecturally beautiful cities in Northern Europe. As such, Edinburgh is a popular destination for visitors all year round, but really explodes into life during the month of August when Festival fever hits. The International, Fringe, Jazz, Film, and Book Festivals and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo compete with existing exhibitions, galleries, museums, and places of architectural and historic interest to offer something for everyone.

Programme

The programme we have put together is intended to help you make the most of your stay with us during this busy period. On arrival you will receive a welcome pack full of useful information and guidance and early in your stay will have a guided city tour to help with orientation. You will receive lectures focusing on different aspects of Edinburgh’s past and present, and your experienced lecturers will point you towards places of interest for you to visit in your free time.

You will attend selected events, including an evening at the world famous Military Tattoo*, set against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, and will take in a show from the Festival programme. The Scottish Associations have arranged a visit to the famous Glenkinchie Whisky distillery where you may even sample a wee dram (or two!) and it will be ‘all aboard’ as you visit the Royal Yacht Britannia. There will also be the opportunity to visit the controversial new home of the Scottish Parliament.

In addition to all this, you will sample the finest Scottish cuisine in the company of members from the Scottish associations at our welcome dinner, be received by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh at a Civic Reception in the City Chambers, and enjoy home hospitality from local members of the Scottish associations.
