Travelling to Edinburgh

Edinburgh is an extremely acessible city with excellent air, rail and bus links. For a map of the UK showing Edinburgh click here.

By Train

Trains (National Express) from London Kings Cross leave every hour, with a journey time scheduled at slightly under 4.5 hours. National Express trains travel up the east coast line and their website is www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com/

Virgin trains provide direct cross country services to many other cities in England. The Virgin trains website is www.virgin.com/trains.

Edinburgh's principal railway terminus is Waverley Station which is located at the east end of Princes Street, 3 miles from Murrayfield Stadium and 1/2 a mile from the University. 

There is also Haymarket Station, at the west end of Princes Street, where trains from the West Coast or from Glasgow will also stop. Haymarket Station is 1 mile from Murrayfield, a taxi from the train station to Murrayfield will cost around £5. There is a taxi rank at both stations.

By Coach/Bus

Coaches arrive in St Andrews Square located almost directly across Princes Street from the Waverley Train Station. St Andrews Square is a 20 minute walk from the University and a 15 minute taxi journey to Murrayfield Stadium.

There are frequent services from London Victoria Bus Station to Edinburgh. Further information can be obtained from www.nationalexpress.com or telephone 08705 808 080.

By Air

Edinburgh Airport (tel: 0870 040 0007 / web: www.edinburghairport.com) has direct flights to most UK airports and to most European capitals. It is located about a 20 minute drive west of the city centre. A taxi from the airport to the University should cost around £20, depending on the time of day.

Lothian Region Transport operates a frequent Airlink service from the airport to Waverley train station (journey time 25-30 mins) and also a door to door Edinburgh Shuttle bus service. Special rates are available for European Society of Criminology delegates, click here for more details.

Discount carriers Easyjet (www.easyjet.com) operate services between London Luton and Stansted airports and Edinburgh, along with services to other regional airports around the UK. Flybe (www.flybe.com) operate services between Birmingham airports and Edinburgh. Advance purchase fares can be as little as £35 return fare on these routes if booked well in advance. A similar fare is also available between Edinburgh and Dublin, and Belfast.

British Airways and British Midland fly between Edinburgh and London Heathrow (BA also has flights to London Gatwick). Advance purchase fares from these airlines are usually around £70 but are seldom available at peak flight times. British European flies between London City Airport and Edinburgh.

Travelling within Edinburgh

Please note there are major tram works at the West End of Edinburgh, please allow extra time if travelling to Murrayfield from the city centre.

The main conference venue (Murrayfield Stadium) is close to the main bus link into the city centre and within walking distance of many of the hotels on the accommodation page.

Buses

Edinburgh's city centre is compact, so you may find that walking is the best way to get around. Edinburgh does not have an underground system and work on a tram system has only recently started, but it does have a frequent and comprehensive bus service. The main operator within Edinburgh is Lothian Regional Transport.  Their website is www.lothianbuses.co.uk / tel: 0131 555 6363. Please note LRT buses do not give change and a single journey anywhere within the city centre costs £1.10.  A day ticket which offers unlimited travel on their buses for one day costs £2.50

Parking

There is ample parking at the main conference venue (Murrayfield) for any delegates who require a parking space.
